This book is broken down in 2 parts; Part One has 21 chapters that discuss prayer in depth, as well as questions, journaling exercises and a great deal of scripture, while Part Two is a 21 day devotional that also incorporates journaling and scripture. The author makes a lot of good points during Part One, including that prayer is more about having a relationship with God and less about ritual. I think this is an important thing to remember, as I imagine that many people turn prayer into more of a ritual, instead of a relationship, without even realizing they are doing it. Throughout each chapter in Part One, the author provides a great deal of scripture and questions going along with that scripture relating to the specific topic in that chapter. The only thing I didn’t really like, was how the author talks about anxiety in a few of the chapters. I have read many Christian books that don’t acknowledge that for many individuals with true mental illness, it is biological in nature and it can’t be “prayed away.” Please don’t interrupt that the wrong way, I believe that prayer helps with everything, I am just a big advocate for mental health so I tend to notice things that maybe others wouldn’t. Otherwise, Part 1 is filled with a great deal of advice on how to advance the way your prayer and the book contains a great deal of scripture to help you along the way. Part 2 is a 21 day devotional that continues on with what was presented in Part One and each devotional is broken down into 5 parts; journal, meditate, devotional, pray aloud and declare. I really liked the way the devotionals were written and broken down into these sections as well. Overall, an interesting book about prayer and learning to focus on your relationship with God, as well as praying for specific things.
