After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished. When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

The Wicked King was everything I had hoped it would be and more! I do have to admit, the first few chapters were a bit slow, but after that the rest of the book moved along at a great pace. The books starts about 5 months after The Cruel Prince ended and we find Jude trying to keep control of the power she stole in the first book. Cardan is as charming as ever. This book is filled with lots of scheming from all of the characters involved and also featured a lot of the court politics, which was to be expected. I was amazed at where this story went and all of the twists and turns that came along with it. You will spend the book trying to figure out how it will end and I assure you, whatever you guess is, it’s probably wrong.

I don’t want to give anything away but I do want to say that the tension between Cardan and Jude in this book is fantastic. The ending of this book is one of the reasons this book gets 5 stars because wow, didn’t see that coming. Towards the end of the book there are two plot twists, one I was like “Yay!” that’s amazing and then the books ends and I was like “Wth Holly Black?” But it is pretty brilliant and I can not wait to see what happens in the third book.
