Abby Johnson quit her job in October 2009. That simple act became a national news story because Abby was the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who, after participating in her first actual abortion procedure, walked across the road to join the Coalition for Life. “Unplanned” is a heart-stopping personal drama of life-and-death encounters, a courtroom battle, and spiritual transformation that speaks hope and compassion into the political controversy that surrounds this issue. Telling Abby’s story from both sides of the abortion clinic property line, this book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the life versus rights debate and helping women who face crisis pregnancies.

I didn’t know much about Abby Johnson’s story prior to reading this book, beyond the fact that she worked for Planned Parenthood before making a decision to leave and join Coalition for Life. The book opens with a very dramatic description of the ultrasound-guided abortion that Abby assisted with, that led her to make the decision to leave Planner Parenthood. Throughout the book, the author gives us her backstory, from where she grew up, to mistakes she made to her years in college and beyond. This was helpful as I began to have a better understanding of Abby as a person, outside of her career.

Abby joined Planned Parenthood as a volunteer during college because she wanted to help women. She does seem fairly naive when she talks about some things, but being a young college student that of course does make sense. This book is slightly difficult for me to review because I don’t want this to start a debate about abortion. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion and I don’t want to bring my views into it. Overall, I found it to be a very interesting story and I thought that Abby was brave for making the decision to leave Planned Parenthood, even when she wasn’t sure what her future would hold. The story itself is very interesting, but the writing could have been a bit better. There were several times where I felt like the author repeated herself over and over. It is a very interesting story that I encourage everyone to read, regardless of your views on abortion.
